Let me ask you a question.

What do you need to do to be a market leader in your business?

If you were a leader in your field:

A person at the top of your game, rubbing shoulders with the people you admired the most when you first started your business, what would you be doing right now?

If that was you, a person who was quoted in the media, invited to speak at conferences around the world, what would you be focusing on in your business today?

Close your eyes for just a moment and imagine what your business would look like if you were one of the best in the world at what you do.

Where would you be? How would it feel? What would your days look like?

Go on – just close your eyes and feel it, see it.

Now lets take a moment to capture that vision.

Grab a pen and spend 3 minutes (no more)  giving the first answer that comes into your head for these questions:

1. How much money would you have made in the last 12 months if you were one of the leaders in your field?

2. How many clients and customers would you have helped?

3. What staff would you have and what would they be doing to help you?

4. What difference would you have made in the lives of your clients, staff, family?

5. What are the things that you would be most proud of right now?

6. How would you feel about yourself and the business you created?  How would people treat you?

7. What conferences would you be speaking at?  Where would you travel to this year?

8. What charities would you have donated to? What would you kids or family say about you?

How did it feel writing the answers to those questions?

Did you feel the buzz of what that could be like? Did you see the pictures in your mind?

When you first dreamed of starting your business you knew that you wanted to be a leader.

You wanted to create a business that was a reflection of you, that helped your customers with what they needed, quickly and professionally with class and style.

The truth is: the foundation of many of the things you just imagined may already be present in your business.

Some of the seeds of being a leader may have already been planted in what you do and how you do it.

You may already have products and services, happy customers or other important foundations in place.

So the bigger question for you now is this:

Imagine you were already on the way to achieving the things you just jotted down.

If you were a leader in your field, what would you be doing right now?

The truth is: the foundation of many of the things you need to become an emerging leader may already be present in your business. Here’s a few ways to check.

Who would you have to be to make this happen?

How would your business need to shift to get there?

Today is an opportunity for you  to pick one or two things to focus on over the next 6 – 12 months that you know will lay down the next pieces upon which your next business leap will occur.

So here are:

3 Key Questions To Take Your Next Step Towards Industry Leadership

Take a moment to consider your answers to these 3 questions.

As you write, consider the one or two leaders in your industry you truly admire and the 1 or 2 things you most like about their style or businesses.

1. Systems and Values

As a leader in my field, what are the elements that would be important to build into how my business runs and interacts with customers day to day?

Is it professionalism? Fun? We always deliver on what we promise? Deep care for our customers? 24 hour replies to queries? Presentation & Design? Continual Improvement? Timeliness?

How would you incorporate 1 of these key principles into your systems and values to show the world what your business stands for?

2. Innovation, Uniqueness, and Marketing

As an innovator in what I do, what are 1 or 2 key areas I would focus on next to help me stand out and grow my business?

Perhaps it’s how I create and develop my products? Innovation and Quality Control? Content Marketing? Pricing? Sales Conversion? Media? Connections and partnerships? Customer retention and follow up?

3. Me As The Centre Point Of My Business

As the centre-point of my business, what is the 1 thing I need to do personally to make sure I am constantly learning and tuning into my intuition to expand who I am as the leader of my business?

Is it to plan a holiday? Get Coaching to become a better speaker? Believe in myself more? Walk every day? Create better systems at home and work so I have more free time?  Focus on my finances and numbers? Have a date night with my partner once a week? Attend a meditation retreat? Get more comfy with marketing and sales in my business? Take breaks through the day to create space for ideas and innovation?

The answers to these questions will give you clues about key things you should put into your plan in order to be seen as a rising star in your field.

Finally – look at your list, see where your gut pulls you to and choose 1 or 2 things to focus on next.

So now its over to you.

What answers did you come up with? Were you surprised by what you wrote?

What’s the 1 or 2 things you are going to focus on next?

  1. Great breakdown on what it takes to be who you want to be and where you want to be.

Personally, I would relish speaking at small business start-up or motivational events. Or hold creative workshops, which ties in nicely with my clients and products.

Seeing that written down made me realise that I have a workshop set up for September, so that’s a start!

  2. That’s great Emma. You’re already on your way!

Sometimes just stopping for a moment and picturing yourself in the position of already being a leader in your field helps you zone in on what is the next piece of the jigsaw that you can put in place that will take you one step closer to becoming that leader.

It’s also about how you see yourself too and how much you give yourself credit for how far you have already come and how talented you really are.

Maybe as part of your preparation if you thought about how you would put that workshop together if you were in the top 3 leaders in your field. Also consider how you would feel about yourself and your products when you stepped up on the stage to host that workshop. It may inspire some ideas too.

    Good luck x

  3. WOW. This is a fabulous exercise. I’m bookmarking so I can give it the time it deserves. Thanks so much for an awesome inquiry. xo! H

  4. Hey Helene, nice to meet you and thanks for the feedback.

BTW – love your site – your design and positioning is really powerful. Keep up the great work xx

  5. This is such a great and comprehensive post! How we show up on a regular basis has more impact on our progress than anything else. We have to be at the center of our business, and at the same time, maintain the flow of information so we don’t become a bottleneck to our own success.

    1. Your right Lisa and I think that sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in little things and forget about the bigger goals we are aiming for and what we need to do today to take us one step closer.

  6. Great post Clare. It made me think about what my vision really looks like. And it also made me think that it’s not clear enough – YET. I’m going to use the questions above to really get clear and focused on what I want my life to look like. Thanks for giving me a kick in the pants.

  7. Wow you’re really making me think Clare. This is such a great post. I would have helped thousands of women create awesome content that Google loves. I will be a little more selective about who I choose to work with.

    1. I like that take away Shae. I think that sometimes its easy to lose track of our bigger picture and who are our ideal clients.

  8. I love love love the imagination exercise Claire! I’ve used and use similar exercises on myself and my clients and I can attest that they work! You ask some really great Qs too. I’m definitely going to incorporate some of them into my own vision. And Step 3 is the exact thing I need to be doing right now that I didn’t know I needed to be doing. I feel more clarity just reading the question and I haven’t even gotten into yet! Super helpful post, thank you!

  9. Clare, I sooooo loved this post! It felt simply amazing to do…. important stuff, this visioning!

My one thing that I’m focusing on now is making more connections with thought leaders.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  10. Hey Marie, so glad this helped, and I love the idea of focussing on creating those connections with thought leaders – maybe they will then become your closest peers as you become a leader in your field.

    Good luck! xx

  11. What a great exercise. I am going to do this, this week! I actually was going through my notes from RHH Live, 2012, and I had very similar questions written down. This is my sign to do this work. Amazing, life-changing questions.

  12. Hey Reena,

I’m so glad these questions helped you.

You’ve got a great business and I can already see you as a leader in tours and experiences to India and beyond! xx

  13. deep insightful questions that really made me stop and think, clare. what am i doing in my business NOW that will ultimately lead me to where i want to GO? i’m currently building up my offerings (which includes all of the creating and marketing that goes along with that), so i guess that is my next step.
